Randy Bragg - a failed canidate for political office who works part time as a lawyer, and lives off his family's land. He is seen in the beginning as a failed alcoholic but emerges as the leader of Fort Repose in the end.
Mark Bragg - Randy's brother who works as an officer in the SAC (Strategic Air Command). He is the one to warn Randy about the upcoming nuclear war and he sends his wife and kids to Fort Repose, Flordia to live with Randy during the war.
Helen Bragg - Wife to Mark who is moved to Fort Repose for the duration of the war. She turns into the cook and one of the teachers for Peyton and Ben Franklin.
Peyton Bragg - Daughter of Mark and Helen Bragg. She solves the fish problem in Fort Repose.
Ben Franklin Bragg - Son of Mark and Helen Bragg. He is forced to grow up faster than he would have if the nuclear bombs hadn't hit.
Elizabeth McGovern - (a.k.a. Lib) Randy's wife. She helps Helen teach the kids. She is the person who comes up with the idea of using the grocery truck as a decoy for the highway men.
Dan Gunn - The doctor of Fort Repose who is attacked by highway men on the way back from a house call. He becomes a very important part of the soceity after the bombing.
